"I wanted to be part of transformative projects to make people proud of where they live.”
Mark Schaer
Place Strategist
Planning & Development Studio
As Place Strategist at Place Foundry, Mark combines market research expertise with a deep commitment to helping communities realize their potential. In his role, Mark works closely with property owners, municipalities, and economic development organizations to develop place-based strategies that transform underperforming properties into magnetic destinations where people want to live, visit, and invest.
Growing up in Rockford, Mark witnessed firsthand the transformative power of strategic placemaking. Watching downtown Rockford's evolution from his high school years through early adulthood inspired him to pursue graduate studies in real estate and urban land economics at UW-Madison. That experience shaped his career focus: being part of projects that make people genuinely proud of where they live.
Mark's approach to place strategy is distinctly people-focused. He thrives on collaboration and finds energy in working alongside clients and community stakeholders to uncover what makes each area unique. His background includes several years as a sports writer for the Rockford Register Star and contributing to a Fighting Illini sports blog—experience that honed the strong written communication skills that set him apart in the real estate and development world. Whether crafting market analyses, community engagement materials, or strategic recommendations, Mark translates complex data and insights into clear, compelling narratives that move projects forward.
At Place Foundry, Mark contributes to site development due diligence, market positioning, and master planning efforts that help communities get on the growth track and stay there. His work reflects the firm's interdisciplinary approach, blending analytics with design thinking to ensure each project develops an authentic identity and sustainable strategy.
Outside of work, Mark is a devoted Fighting Illini football and basketball fan, enjoys playing pickup basketball with friends, and volunteers at his parish.
